Keep on Learning

By Pastor Bill Gaube

Have you ever heard of Facebook? Well, yes, unless you are living in outer Slobovia you have. Do you use Facebook? Believe it or not even some of us “seniors” do. My first post stated “look, old dogs can learn new tricks!”

The truth is, we are never too old to learn. In fact my definition of growing old is: “when we stop learning.” I’ve seen some pretty young people stop growing. They get stuck in old patterns and grow old early.

To help pay for Graduate School, I worked in a Personnel Department of a company. (That is Human Resources to you younger people.) One day I excitedly showed my boss a job application we’d received. The guy had 9 years of experience! My boss looked up and said, “We need to discover if he has 9 years of experience or one year he repeated 9 times.”

I’ve been a Christian for 60 years. Yet I have to admit I do not have 60 years of Christian growth. Being a disciple of Christ means we are learners. Christian maturity is not how long we’ve been a Christian, but how much are we learning from the Lord.

Remember how Jesus was frustrated toward the end of His ministry when the disciples asked Him a question? His answer was, “Have I not been with you so long, and you do not know?” In other words, “after all this time, haven’t you learned?”

One simple prayer helps me be a learner. During rough and tough times I pray: “Lord, what do you want me to learn in this?” Next to my prayer of initial faith, it is the most important prayer I’ve prayed.

A dying Christian was once asked, “What caused your deepest spiritual growth?” He answered he was thankful for all the blessings God had given, but he wouldn’t be where he was spiritually if he had missed one of the trials and tribulations.

A mentor of mine always asked: “What has God been teaching you lately?” Ask yourself that question.

All-Church Retreat is getting closer!

By Roberta Miller

Have you signed up for Retreat yet? Don’t miss out! We’re planning lots of great fun and opportunities so we can grow together. Here’s some more information you’ll need.

When is the Retreat? September 14-16

Who will be our speaker? Leonard Lee will be at retreat to teach and inspire us to grow together. Leonard has a unique ability to grab people’s attention through humor, and then touch a person’s heart with truth. He is a speaker that can deal with the deep issues of life in a way that is simple and motivating.

Where will Retreat be held? We are going to Silver Spur Christian Camp and Retreat Center in Tuolumne, on the edge of the Stanislaus National Forest, approximately 2 ½ hours from Rancho Cordova.

What can I do there? Silver Spur has many recreation choices for your free time. For the kids there is a 2-story play structure. There is basketball, baseball, swimming, hiking, as well as Silver Spur’s one of a kind Carpet Ball. For those who prefer a little peace and quiet, there a peaceful deck with adirondack chairs. And of course there will be team competitions and challenges.

Where will I sleep? We’ll stay in the Silver Spur Lodge, right in the center of camp. The Lodge has housing wings with several rooms per wing. Each family will have their own room. Singles can choose a roommate or two to bunk with. Each room has 3 sets of bunk beds (including one lower bunk that pulls out to be a double bed) as well as a vanity and sink. Large shared bathrooms with toilets and showers are at the end of each wing.

How do I sign up? Get a registration form at the bulletin board in the narthex or the Retreat display on Sundays. Complete it and return it to the office along with your $25 deposit to the church office by mail or by dropping them into one of the offering boxes. Final payments must be in by August 15.

Any other questions? If so, give me a call at the church office, 916-635-5992.

Our Teens Love Summer!

By Youth Pastor Bryce Cooley

It’s that time again. Summer time! Though everyday has not felt like summer, all of our students are waiting with eager expectation to walk out of school and not come back for 3 months. With summer comes a lot of fundraising and a lot of fun. After all you can’t have FUNdraising without FUN. Here are our summer plans:

High school camp (June 10 – 15)
Camp will be at Alliance Redwoods in Occidental, CA. Camp cost $350 which pays for travel, lodging, food, entertainment and activities. It’s well worth it and with all the fundraisers we have been doing more than half of it is paid for a majority of our high school students. Summer Camp is a time that blesses and challenges our students to re-think the way they live and draw closer to God. It is an amazing chance for them to get away, re-evaluate and start their summer of with God on their minds. I’m so excited for our High Schoolers.

Middle School Camp (July 8 – 11)
Camp with be at Camp Alta in Alta, CA. Some will know this is the camp our middle school kids went to for Winter Camp. They loved it and wanted to return for the Summer Season as well! With that and the $175 price of admission, we decided to move our Summer Camp program to Camp Alta. Money is tight and we want to help families in any way possible. I am certain that students and staff alike will be blessed by the ministry of Camp Alta’s friendly staff and leadership.

Ministry Graduation dates
8th graders going into 9th grade are welcome to start coming to high school group starting Thursday July 19. High School group over the summer will be held at the Cooley’s house (11119 Concord River Ct.) for a good time hanging out and swimming.

Graduating Seniors can begin going to our college ministry June 24. The college ministry meets at Philip Cooley’s home (10660 Beclan Dr.) in Rancho Cordova and goes from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Fireworks Booth
The fireworks booth is coming. Do you have students you’re trying to raise money for or even a friend with a student? Each hour you work gives $10 towards the student of your choice. Sign up on Sundays or e-mail me at bryce@cnchurch.org and I can tell you the availability.

We are looking for someone to open and close the booth June 29 – July 4. If you can take care of this, we will pay half of a designated students way to Summer Camp this year.

Have a blessed day,
Bryce

Getting Away

By Pastor Mike Mitchum

In May, I was able to go to a men’s retreat in Colorado. For four days I stayed in a retreat center in the Rocky Mountains. I found out there is nothing like the clear blue sky at 8,500 foot elevation to clear one’s head.

Then I found out something else. There is nothing like getting away from the hustle and bustle of daily living to clear out the cobwebs in one’s soul. I got to hear good preaching (I didn’t have to listen to my own for a change!) and spend quiet time alone. It was so refreshing!

I have had these kind of experiences before, and that is why I have pushed for us to have an all-church retreat at CNC. Granted it won’t be in the Rocky Mountains, but the concept is the same. On September 14-16, we will all have the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily living. Those who go will get to hear good preaching (not mine, but a speaker named Leonard Lee!) and spend time alone or with others from the CNC church family.

This retreat is designed to help us bond together more closely as a church family and experience the refreshment that comes from a few days of concentrating on our relationship with the Lord. It will also be a lot of fun for those who attend. You can get details any Sunday morning at CNC or on the website.

I will be ready for another getaway in September. I hope you will join me.

Alliance Prayer Requests

Guinea Update

Thanks to all who prayed for Kyle and Maggie Ibsen and their unborn twins. God is answering! Recently, Maggie underwent several examinations, which revealed that the boys’ hearts and lungs are doing very well, and Maggie’s condition has improved. After comparing the new measurements to those taken the previous week, the technician said that they must have made a mistake previously. Maggie said, “No, there has been no mistake. God is answering prayer!” Although there was no amniotic fluid two weeks ago, there was some more recently. The doctor has declared the twins to be stable at this point. It would be best for Maggie to keep the babies for three or four more weeks before delivering them. Please continue to pray that she will be able to do soThanks to all who prayed for Kyle and Maggie Ibsen and their unborn twins. God is answering! Mali Update
Continue to pray for Mali. After the military agreed to transfer power to a transitional government, an interim president and a prime minister were selected. The transition period ended on May 22, and democratic elections are supposed to be held.  Pray that this process will take place peacefully. Also, a famine has affected hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom have fled to the south or to neighboring countries and are living in ill-equipped refugee camps.

Several Alliance international workers plan to return to Mali in late May or early June, as long as the airport remains open and fighting does not break out on the streets of Bamako, the capital. Continue to pray for the seven workers still at the Koutiala hospital and for three workers remaining in Bamako. Also, pray that refugees in Mali and neighboring countries will be open to the gospel during this challenging time.

Russia Update
Thanks to all who prayed for Steve Volstad, who was diagnosed with stage 1 malignant melanoma (May 1 prayer requests). No more cancer was discovered in his second surgery, so no further treatment is necessary. “We are praising the Lord for His goodness,” write the Volstads.

Syria Update
Continue to pray for peace in Syria, where more than 11,100 people have been killed since March 2012. Hundreds of families have fled to neighboring countries, where Alliance churches assist refugees. Pray that God will protect His people and end the violence. Also, pray that believers will demonstrate Christ’s love and that God will be glorified in this situation.

CREATIVE-ACCESS COUNTRIES
Remember creative-access (CAC) workers around the world. Pray for protection, good health, and opportunities to share the good news. Pray that contacts will be drawn to Jesus. Pray that God will break down strongholds and give courage and boldness to national believers.
