Women’s Retreat is a Time for Truth, Laughter, & Connection

By Pastor Susan Wright

The women’s retreat 2013 is almost here: May 31 – June 2. This getaway will offer 7 things.

  1. Four sessions of teaching and worship that will inspire and encourage
  2. Beautiful mountain and lake scenery
  3. Free time that can be spent alone or with others
  4. Rest and refreshment
  5. Opportunities to hear from God and others
  6. Fun and laughter
  7. Pampering because there are no chores

Our speakers, Jenny Arnez, Shula Gossard, and Pastor Susan Wright will lead us through John 3:16, the numbers of hope.

“One sentence [John 3:16], softly spoken two thousand years ago, is just as relevant today as when first uttered. If you know nothing of the Bible, start here. If you know everything in the Bible, return here.” (back cover of book, The 3:16 Promise)

The words of John 3:16 are “timeless and powerful, these words proclaim a message of love, a source of hope, and a promise of life,” (back cover of DVD study).

Reminder – Final retreat payment is due Sunday, May 5.

Good News - There are still some vacancies. To get the details and registration form, connect with Pastor Susan today: Susan@cnchurch.org, 635-5992 x14.

Pastor Gaube’s Musings

Peace is something we all want. We desire to live in peace with others and with ourselves. Some say that we should start with seeking peace with ourselves. That’s a great idea, but the more I try, the more uncertainty and conflict seems to arise. Maybe that’s not the place to start.

A tantalizing phrase in the Bible is “Peace with God.” The question arises, “Who is this God with whom we seek peace?” Personally I have found help in Paul’s benediction given in 2 Corinthians 13:14: “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” Let me explain why this gives help.

  1. For a lot of us, our problem is that our God is too small. Paul pictures a God so great that he must express himself to us in three ways: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We cannot fully understand the unity that exists in these, but we can see this God is greater than we imagined. Great enough to help us.
  2. But how can we approach such a great God? Our relationship with God starts with Him. Notice Paul begins with the grace of Jesus Christ. God is reaching out to us through the mercy and forgiveness Christ achieved on the Cross. Relax and accept his gift.
  3. Accepting this gift means we accept God’s love. I fear we have so abused our concept of love with sentimentality and eroticism that we really can’t understand God’s love. His love is just. He couldn’t just ignore our failings but had to open the way by giving His Son as payment for our sins. No wonder the Bible says we love Him because he first loved us.
  4. We are able to relate to God because the Holy Spirit enables us to have fellowship with Him. This pictures warmth and interaction. God is with us in the nitty-gritty of our daily lives. The Spirit is the comforter, guide and power that Jesus promised when he went away. The Spirit wants to personalize the love of God in us.

Start to find peace by finding peace with God. His peace can help us have peace with ourselves and others. No wonder Jesus describe this peace as “passing all understanding.”

Meeting Jesus

By Scotti Fritts

As we approach Easter and ponder Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf, consider this blog from Rich and Elisa Brown about their challenge to meet Jesus in a new way. Rich and Elisa established Inca Link Peru to provide relief to families living in a garbage dump near Trujillo, Peru.

Matthew 25 talks about the difference between the sheep and goats: the sheep did something for those in need, while the goats pretended not to know about them. When we first arrived at the garbage dump where we minister, this chapter grabbed my heart. We could not stand there with our arms crossed — we had to do something to meet Jesus in His disguises: the hungry, the imprisoned,
the stranger. How could I ever face Him on Judgment Day and hear Him say, “You saw me in need and you did nothing”? As part of our ministry in the dump, we organized a weekly soccer game that is followed by a one-on-one Bible study with the young teens who live there. I was paired up
with Moisés, 15. We always bring food to share before the Bible study, and he said, “I would like to pray for the food!”

Moisés folded his hands and knelt in the dump. I looked around, not knowing what to do, but I finally knelt down next to him. I thought, “This is the first time I have ever knelt before God in the garbage.”
“Dear Jesus, thank You for providing food for me today,” Moisés prayed, “but I pray for the poor—that You would provide for them today. And if You want, I will share with them what I have here.” My heart was torn apart. We had “poor” youth leaders sharing with the poverty-stricken people in the dump—and here is this kid praying for the “poor.” Then it struck me. In Matthew 25, Jesus does not say to go to the poor. He says to go to the needy. Some of the wealthiest people I know live in a spiritual garbage dump. The question is: Will we visit Jesus in His disguises, or are we too busy to notice or too comfortable to bother?

6 Ways to Find the Money for Women’s Retreat

By Pastor Susan Wright

When you need to come up with extra money, how do you “find” it? Below are six ways I have used:

  1. I raided my piggy bank to pay for this year’s deposit.
  2. Some years I make monthly payments in order to pay for Retreat.
  3. One year I collected enough money from emptying pants’ pockets while doing the laundry.
  4. I’ve cashed in on soda cans and bottles.
  5. And one year I stopped going out to eat and to get coffee until I had enough money for Retreat.
  6. My best answer is finding money for Retreat is to pray first. I know that if God wants me (or you) to be at Retreat, He will provide the money.

Have you turned in your Women’s Retreat deposit yet? If not, please do so today!

NOTE: We still have some spots available for Retreat, May 31- June 2. Fill out your registration form and turn it in with the deposit today! We’d love to have you with us.

Need a form? Contact Pastor Susan (635-5992 x14) or grab a form from the office or from the table in the church narthex.

Children’s Ministry has volunteer opportunities in the Nursery and in the elementary age classes at both services.

“Don’t get tired of helping others. You will be rewarded when the time is right, if you don’t give up. We should help people whenever we can, especially if they are followers of the Lord.” Galatians 6: 9-10

Give Your Love.
Our children will obviously benefit from you serving and loving them. And you will also benefit from serving and loving them.

“And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.” Matthew 10:42.

You’ve Been Flocked!

By Pastor Bryce Cooley

The Great Flamingo Migration of early 2013 is coming to a close on April 6th and I have to say, what a blast! I have loved hearing stories, seeing photos and watching you all engage in this “church sanctioned mischief.” This is surely one of those events that puts the FUN in FUNdraising. My early estimates is that by the end of the fundraiser we will have raised a net profit of around $450 dollars and a gross of about $720. The great news is, when we do this in the future it will all be profit because the flamingos are paid off. In case you were wondering, we will be doing this in the future so if you missed your chance fear not; the migration will return. Thank you again for helping raise money for our Summer Camp program.

Speaking of summer programs, we’re going back to Ensenada Mexico with Church of the Foothills and Rancho Murietta Neighborhood Church and hope to bring 5 students along. The cost of Camp and Mexico is a hefty $800 so students could use your help. I would encourage you to talk to our High School students about Mexico and consider sponsoring them in raising money to go. Mexico money will fully be raised through personal fundraising so our students need your support. Be looking for support letters in the next month and a half and prayerfully consider supporting our students. Brianna and I had a blast last year and I know if more students come, they will be equally blessed.

Thank you for your continual support of the youth ministry at CNC. Please keep our students and leaders in your prayers. If you have any interest in being involved in the youth ministry at CNC as a leader, chaperone or a weekly prayer partner, please e-mail me bryce@cnchurch.org.
