Men's Fellowship

Our men’s fellowship will begin a new series on “Discipleship.” We will be using Matthew 5-7 as a basis of our study. We will wrestle with what it means to “walk with Jesus” with an aim of learning from Him as His apprentice. We encourage men to join us for this study and discussion beginning Saturday, June 11, 2011. Men’s fellowship meets regularly at CNC in Rudat Hall, every other Saturday morning from 8am to 10am.

"The Beloved Disciple Looks Back"

By Pastor Mike Mitchum

Have you ever sat and listened to a wise, elderly person, give their perspective on their life or the events of history? There is much to be learned from that kind of conversation because passing years tend to make the events of our lives become more clear. By “more clear” I don’t mean that the memory of details is sharper. Often, that is not the case. There is often, however, a clarity about the importance of the event in one’s life.

Life changing events are only recognized with the passing of some time. That is when one knows if life has, indeed, changed.

On Easter Sunday morning, I am looking forward to presenting a first person drama entitled, “The Beloved Disciple Looks Back.” The title bears reference to the Apostle John, who called himself, “The disciple whom Jesus loved.”

John had the advantage of living well into his nineties. That was longer than any of the other disciples. He wrote the last book of the New Testament (The Book of Revelation) near the end of his life. He had about sixty years after the resurrection to reflect on its meaning. To hear him look back on the events of that first resurrection day will be very valuable indeed!

Please plan to be at CNC on Easter Sunday morning. It will be like sitting with a favorite grandfather and hearing stories that will amaze and move you. I am hoping it will be life changing for us.

Oh, and by the way, bring a friend!

New Men's Study

By Edward Strom, CNC Elder

The men of CNC have begun a study of Every Man’s Battle, men only 18+ years old. We meet at CNC at 8:00 AM every other Saturday. Refer to the church schedule for meeting dates.

I have a few free books; they are used, so please ignore any marks in them. Please come to CNC before 8:10 AM, because we often go to someone’s house nearby; however, we will wait until 8:10. Call me if you come to CNC and we are not there; the cell phone number is 916-812-5290.

What is it about modern Christianity that is driving men away?

books“Just 35% of American men say they attend church weekly…and women make up more than 60% of the typical congregation on a given Sunday.”

“[David] Murrow contends that the church caters to women, children and the elderly by creating a safe, predictable environment. This alienates anyone fond of risk taking, including young men and women, but men are affected most. In order to reach men, Murrow suggests, churches must “adjust the thermostat” to embrace the masculine spirit: let men lead; give them tasks; encourage pastors to show strength and teach men through object lessons, letting them discover truth for themselves.”

“Two of the best outreach methods: start rigorous mentoring programs and help men make friends with other men. Murrow bases his conclusions on what he claims are legitimate biological and cultural gender differences. He is aware that these observations might offend, and his thesis will find few takers among those who believe that the church needs less, not more, male influence. But Murrow’s work is quite likely to get an enthusiastic reception from many Christian men. It contains sharp observations that will provoke much discussion—and, perhaps, some change.” Publishers Weekly

Come join a new co-ed, 8 week, bible study about men and their role in the church. Men, be prepared to be challenged. Women, come learn what you can do to motivate the men in your life to be powerful Christian leaders in the church and in the home.
