New Small Group beginning May 6 at 9:30 AM

Understanding Your Mormon Friends

Led by Pastor and Elise Gaube

The purpose of this class is to improve the dialog between you and your Mormon friends. While there are similarities on social issues, there is also a lot of fuzzy thinking about Mormon beliefs. A big block to meaningful dialog between biblical followers of Christ and Mormons is the enormous misconceptions we have of each other.

Elise and I pastored in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, for 18 years. They were both about 70% Mormon at the time. We became friends with our neighbors many of whom were multigenerational Mormons.

One of our main goals is to help us define the terminology that is being used so we may better understand each other. We ask those who attend to have an attitude of respect and there will be no political discussion.

At our next meeting, at 2:00 PM February 14, 2012 at the Waffle House, Southeast of Zinfandel and Folsom, we will be discussing True Honor by Dee Henderson. All adults are welcome at our meeting. And you don’t have to read all the book to come and enjoy getting everyones’ impressions. If you would like, have short portions of the book annotated for a oral reading at the meeting.

For the March 13 meeting, we will discuss Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safram Foer. On April 10, we will discuss The Promise of Hope by Edward Grinnan.

Hope to see all our readers at the next meeting! If you have any questions please give me a call at 916-812-5290.

The Passion of the Christ

Led by Pam Finney

This spring, as a lead-in to Easter, we will be having a class on the Passion of the Christ. The Passion is the last 12 hours of Jesus’s life, and we will be taking a close look at that period of time and the people and events associated with it. We will start by watching Mel Gibson’s The Passion during the first two Sundays (Note: there are many extremely graphic scenes that are difficult to watch). Then we will take three Sundays to go through a three-part study that was put together by Rick Warren’s team covering the Trial, the Death, and the Resurrection of Christ. We will spend the sixth Sunday reviewing over the material and examining just what it means to us as Christians. The study is extremely compelling, challenging, and edifying. It is open to both men and women, and I hope that you can join us.

The class will start on February 26 and end on Palm Sunday, April 1.

Praying Moms Small Group

Led by Shula Gossard

Having children has been likened to “having your heart walk around outside of your body”. Our children mean the world to us and we would do anything for them. And we do do all we can for them, but one of the most powerful things we can do is to pray. In this small group we will be praying through Scripture, seeking the Lord’s face on behalf of our children and supporting each other.

We will start Monday, January 30. We will meet for 6 weeks on the 2nd and 4th Mondays in Shula Gossard’s home, 6:30-8:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served. In between meetings, we will chat via a closed Facebook group. Pick one book to read: The Power of a Praying Parent or The Power of Praying for Your Adult Children. Costs vary. Talk to Shula Gossard about a book and to RSVP. (916-635-0499 or thegossards@att.net)

The Truth Project

Led by John and Denise Drake

We thought we had a good understanding of a Biblical Worldview—that is until we participated in the Truth Project! The Truth Project is a DVD-based small group curriculum comprised of 13 one-hour lessons taught by Dr. Del Tackett. It is a starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. For more information, visit their web site here.

The Truth Project will meet on Sundays beginning January 29 at 11:00.
