Summer is coming!
By Pastor Bryce Cooley
Summer Camp is on it’s way and I can’t wait! With Summer Camp just around the corner, it is fundraiser season. I want to let you know about stuff that is coming up over the next few months that can allow you to partner with our students in sending them to camp. The camp dates are High School June 12 – 17 and Middle School June 18 – 23. Each student needs to raise $350 dollars to go to camp; here is how you can help!
Fireworks booth sign ups – We are starting sign ups for the fireworks booth. Sign ups will be out every Sunday between May 1 and June 19, or until full. Make some money for your kids camp! For every hour you work you make $10 towards the cost of your designated student’s camp. Money will be credited to your account for camp and you will work to pay off the balance after camp is complete.
Family Movie Night - Friday, May 13 (and every 2nd Friday through July) at 5:30 – 8:30
There’s donation based activities with meals, face painting and photobooth included. Movie: “How To Train Your Dragon.”
Car Wash – Saturday May 21, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the CNC big parking lot
Family Movie Night - Friday, June 10 (and every 2nd Friday through July) at 5:30 – 8:30 There’s donation based activites with meals, face painting and photo booth included. Movie: :”Tangled.”
There are some exciting things happening in our youth ministry, specifically in the area of our middle school ministry (REACT 22). Beau and Rhonda deGraaf have been added to the ministry team and are taking care of many of the midweek responsibilities. It is so exciting to get them involved, but why don’t I let Beau tell you a little of what we have planned:
“In praying about working with the middle school, God gave us many ideas. We changed the format of Wednesdays to hopefully get to know the students better and provide a wider learning experience. Games will now include a rewards system where students can earn points through memorizing verses, bringing friends, or serving each other. The normal lecture time is now small groups. The material we are using is “Teaching The Word Of Truth” by Donald Grey Barnhouse which teaches the essentials of the Bible such as salvation, faith, good works, eternal life. We plan to use the last half hour of Wednesday nights for teaching the students life skills they can use to serve. Fun events specifically for the middle school are planned as well as service opportunities. Since the changes have begun to take place, we have had positive feedback from the students. Please be praying for wisdom for the staff of the middle school, for growth for those students already a part of the group, and for those in middle school that we have been unable to reach thus far.”
This is going to be a great summer! Want to see the camp promo video? Check it out here.
Help a HIgh School Student attend Wintercamp
At this time fundraising for Wintercamp 2011 is in full effect. There are a few ways you can support our students and help them raise the money they need for camp.
- Silent Auction(January 30) – Many of you have already talked to me about adding things to our Silent Auction on Sunday, January 30, feel free to call me @ 916-572-9795 and I can give you more details. This is an auction of services as well art, trinckets & food.
- Family Movie Night – We are going to host a family movie night at CNC on Friday February 11 from 5:30 to 8. Bring your family out and watch a movie that is fun for the all ages. More info will be in the bulletins soon.
- Now that I am back we will continue selling cookie dough on Sunday mornings. Buy a tub of cookie dough and get a coupon good for another tub as well as discounts at many local vendors, all for only $20. That is two tubs of cookie dough and restaurant discounts for only $20.
- Sponsor a teen – Our students need help to get to camp. If you desire to help our students, contact me at the number above and I can tell you who needs help!
Traveling
It has been a whirlwind month in my personal life. As I write, today is exactly one month since Bethany and I were wed and we didn’t stop our sprint up until last Tuesday. To give you a quick overview of our last month, we were wed on the December 18, spent a few days in Mendecino, came home for Christmas, flew to the New England states for Bethany’s grandmothers memorial service, flew down to Florida to meet my family and the Mitchum’s for a cruise through the carribean and nearly got stuck in an Atlanta snow storm. Three and a half weeks of straight travel really takes it out of me. I guess I’m not as young as I used to be.
We are glad to be home and see what real married life is like. Please pray for us as we start in this new exciting chapter in our lives.
If there is one thing I can say that God impressed on my heart during this time of travel, especially internationally, is our tendancy to judge the whole by the parts. This was brought into focus on our return bus trip from cave tubing in Belize. There was a group of women sitting in front of us complaining of how horrible Belize was because they had not enjoyed their cave tubing experience. I immediatley thought, “what a ridiculous statement, how can you judge an entire nation based a cave tubing trip?” The more I thought about it the more I realized we do this all the time even in our faith. The Beauty of Beneficence
By Pastor Bryce Cooley
Beneficence means the doing of good; active goodness or kindness; charity.
The importance of this has been impressed upon me time and time again, scripturally as well practically. I will start with the scripture references:
Matthew 6:1 stresses the (1)obligation “when you give” and (2) discreet nature of giving. We shouldn’t parade our giving.
1 Corinthians 16:2 stresses (1) the habitual nature of giving (2) the importance in giving in building up God’s family.
2 Corinthians 9:6-11 stresses (1) the generousity (2) the pureness of motives (3) God’s promise of blessing.
Proverbs 3:27-28 – Stresses (1) obligation to act (2) the laziness we often show when we can do something.
1 Corinthians 13:3 stresses (1) the importance of motive … namingly LOVE.
This is a lesson I have been learning over the past 4 years of my life. [Read more...]
Youth Ministry
By Pastor Bryce Cooley
This is an exciting time in our youth ministry! For awhile now we have been asking for volunteers and though we still need some, we have been blessed by the emergence of a few eager volunteers. Thank you to Brandon Buchert, Debora Sharpless, Dean Snow, Aaron Clover, Daniel Rogers and Corey Chapman for your help when we need you!
Our youth ministry is going to start selling cookie dough along with some great gift cards that will pay for themselves in no time if you and your family eat out often! Look for cookie dough on Sunday mornings before and after services. This stuff is delicious and we have all sorts: white chocolate macadamia, chocolate chunk, snickerdoodle and more. You don’t want to miss out on this mouth watering deal. We have a few events coming up soon be sure to send your students!
November 6 – Mini Golf / Arcade night @ Sunsplash in Roseville
November 19 – 20 – 30 Hour Famine @ CNC
December 31 – New Years Invasion (Middle School Only)
February 18 – 21 – High School Wintercamp 2010 @ Zephyr’s Cove
Needless to say we have a lot going on. Check out our youth website for details or simply give me (Bryce) a call at 916-572-9795.
Life on the run
June and July have been interesting and full to say the least! With two weeks of Summer Camp and one week of fireworks booth, I have been running around non-stop. Two weeks later I am finally recovering.
Summer Camp was an amazing experience for both student and counselors. There were about 400 students at each camp, a great worship band (Between the Trees) and very energetic and engaging speakers. Each night our students were challenged to go deeper with God and were challenged in their current outlooks on God, Faith and Life. Cabin discussions were honest and encouraging. I couldn’t have asked for more out of camp this year. I know for those Seniors who went for their last year as a camper this was a high note to end on! For those who went for their first time the future looks bright!
Fireworks Booth. For those of you who did not hear, on July 2nd in the early morning someone stole all our fireworks. This started off as a bad day but over the next week showed itself as an opportunity for God to provide. Though we would have preferred not dealing with this situation we have seen God come through in this situation through many avenues. Our church and community both showed up with donations and prayers which was a huge encouragement to us. Phantom Fireworks and our Insurance company are both trying to work with us in order to make sure we end up somewhere in the black. Considering Phantom does not offer theft insurance for store containers on site, this is a huge blessing. All in all I have seen a situation that was bad turn into an opportunity to see God do great things. That you for all involved.
Upcoming Events Now that we are back from camp and settled in we are working on our schedule for the end of summer and spring. Please continue to check link name for updates.
On a personal note. For those of you who have not heard, I am now engaged to my long time girlfriend Bethany Broughton. Our wedding is set for December 18, 2010. We are doing everything in our power to get as many people — Family, Friends and Church family — involved as possible. We would appreciate your support in prayer. Youth Summer Fun
CAMP – Welcome to the longest two weeks of my life! I am very excited for this year’s Summer Camp Xtreme 2010. I have only been here one night and know that God is going to change these students in powerful ways. Please keep them in your prayers as they are going to get a heavy dose of God’s word and will be incredibly challenged in it. The worship thus far has been great and has really accomplished drawing the kids into meeting with God. The games likewise have been great. I can’t wait to see what this week has to offer us!
SUPPORT – Another way you can help our students is by sponsoring a student for camp. I understand that they are already at camp but many students were still very short in how much money they were able to raise and your contributions would be a huge blessing to them. I would ask you to pray about this and consider giving to our students. Another way you can support our students is by working in the fireworks booth. Sign ups are on the ledge in the main entrance of the church. I know for a fact that the last few days still have spots.
Thank you for all your help and support. If you have any questions I can be reached at bryce@cnchurch.org.
In Christ,
Bryce

News from the Youth Department
It has been an interesting time in our youth ministry as of late. A good time, a difficult time, a fun time and everything in between. Last month we talked about the writers of the Psalms and hymns, pulling God’s truth and lessons on perseverance from the lines of their songs. It is always encouraging to look back on the rich history of Christians and see the trials they persevered through. God was and is faithful!
This month has been bittersweet. Mike and Jessica Garrison have moved on up to Oregon in order to be closer to Mike’s job as a fireman. This move is great for them but leaves us with a hole in our youth staff and our circle friends. Please be praying for Mike and Jessica as they settle into their new place and get plugged into a local church, which I am told they may have already found!!
Gabe Edmondson, who has been gone at YWAM Montana for 3 months, started his three month outreach in Cambodia on March 16. Please be praying for him for strength, health and success in ministering the Gospel of God to all those he comes in contact with.
In the months to come we are delving into the world of Christian music, opening our students up to different styles of music and the message of God within music.
Due to the gradual depletion of youth staff, from ten to four, we are looking for college or parent volunteers to help out on Thursday nights. This does not need to be a commitment for youth events or fundraisers, strictly someone who is willing to be there on Thursday nights to pour love into teenagers and build relationships. If you are interested, please speak to me about this. I will be talking to people about this over the next few weeks. Please be praying about the possibility of volunteering. The youth are the future of this church and are in desperate need of people actively loving on them. Thank you for your consideration.
Upcoming Events:
- April 2 – All night Lazertag – 10:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. $30.00
- June 13-18 – High School Summer Camp – price should be around $350
- June 19 – 24 – Middle School Summer Camp – price should be around $350
Fundraisers will begin shortly for summer camp! For more details on the happenings in our youth ministry go to www.cncyouth.org or e-mail me: bryce@cnchurch.org.
