Family Friendly Groups has room for more

“What is God doing in your life?”

This is the question that participants of one CNC small group answer every time they gather, the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, 6:30-8pm at the home of Russell and Heather DiSilvestro.

The group has about 6 family groups (this includes parents with children, couples, and at times singles). The main thrust of the group is their shared time together. Each person, from young to old, answers the above question. Then there is a prayer time for each family. Singing throughout and a snack time at the end completes the agenda.

What you need to know:
* They meet from 6:30-8pm the 2nd & 4th Sunday of each month at 2553 Bellhaven Way. Call Russell or Heather if you need directions: 361-3123
* Everyone is asked to bring a small snack. If everyone brings something, it is not a burden on one or two people to bring food for the whole group.
* The kiddos stay with the grownups the whole time. If it would be helpful for your child, bring a quiet toy or two they can play with during the group time.
* If you have any questions, contact Russell or Heather. They will be glad to talk with you.

3 things I learned from the Purpose Driven Life material

By Pam Finney

Here are three of the many truths I have discovered while studying and leading groups through Rick Warren’s Purpose Drive Life:

1. Service is not a burden: it is a blessing.  The more I serve, the richer, fuller, and more balanced my life becomes; one that is in line with God’s purpose for my life.

2. Community includes the people in my town, my neighborhood, my church, my job, my family, and my circle of friends.  I need to purposely strive to develop better relationships with all of them.

3. God has a definite purpose for my life, and I have to purpose to discover it, define it, and live it.

There are no accidents in living a life pleasing to God.  It all happens for a purpose–God’s purpose.  Come join us.  Find your purpose and live a Purpose Driven Life.

Sign up in Rudat Hall, on your Sunday Communication Slip, or call the office at 635-5992.
The class meets on Sundays, September 30-December 16, from 11am-12:10pm.

The Purpose Driven Life book and workbook are a gift from CNC.

Where Do We Find Confidence?

By Pastor Bill Gaube

Watching cancer waste away a 37 year old friend causes you to think. What confidence can we have as we face death and yes, life? After all there is not only my dying friend but also his wife and two darling little girls who must go on. We clearly see that the sin principal has upset the whole God given order.

Paul spoke of certainty for us all in Romans 5:1-3 (Phillips): “Since then it is by faith that we are justified, let us grasp the fact that we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have confidently entered into this new relationship of grace, and here we take our stand, in happy certainty of the glorious things he has for us in the future. This doesn’t mean, of course, that we have only a hope of future joys—we can be full of joy here and now even in our trials and trouble.”

Paul speaks of confidence, certainty and hope. These come as a logical progression from Jesus defeating the corrupting power of sin on the Cross. Since we have been justified by faith in Christ, we take our stand in happy certainty! We can stand in certainty of future joys and present joy in the midst of trials and trouble.

Frankly for me future joys are like a poorly drawn backdrop in an elementary school play. They are there to set things in perspective, but they don’t seem very real. Yes, we read of the joy, peace, love and great fellowship from being in a reality that is God centered and where sin has been defeated. Yet a lot of details are not there.

But wait a minute. How could God communicate ALL of them to us? Think of trying to explain city skyscrapers to someone who lives in a jungle and only knows of a lean-to hut? What frame of reference – language can you use? That is why Scripture speaks of hope. Hope is the evidence of things not seen. Not vague feelings, but God given certainty that there is more than we can see.

Future joys are great, but I’m glad Paul also pointed out we can have present joy. Please note Paul does not white wash the trials and trouble of this life. They are real. But even more real is the fact that God is taking all this mess and bringing out of it “beauty for ashes.” That is the present certain hope we have in Christ.

Watching my friends in their present struggles causes me to challenge myself and them to deepen our understanding of what it means to have Peace with God. Our salvation brings us so much more than “fire insurance” from hell. It brings us a relationship with the God of grace. And that grace gives us certain hope. We can “take our stand in happy certainty” or we can collapse in despair and bitterness. Fortunately, my friends are standing in hope. May the Lord help all of us to grasp more of the glorious things he has for us!

By Roberta Miller

Have you signed up for Retreat yet? Don’t miss out! We’re planning lots of great fun and opportunities so we can grow together. Here’s some more information you’ll need.

When is the Retreat? September 14-16

Who will be our speaker? Leonard Lee will be at retreat to teach and inspire us to grow together. Leonard has a unique ability to grab people’s attention through humor, and then touch a person’s heart with truth. He is a speaker that can deal with the deep issues of life in a way that is simple and motivating.

Where will Retreat be held? We are going to Silver Spur Christian Camp and Retreat Center in Tuolumne, on the edge of the Stanislaus National Forest, approximately 2 ½ hours from Rancho Cordova.

What can I do there? Silver Spur has many recreation choices for your free time. For the kids there is a 2-story play structure. There is basketball, baseball, swimming, hiking, as well as Silver Spur’s one of a kind Carpet Ball. For those who prefer a little peace and quiet, there a peaceful deck with adirondack chairs. And of course there will be team competitions and challenges.

Where will I sleep? We’ll stay in the Silver Spur Lodge, right in the center of camp. The Lodge has housing wings with several rooms per wing. Each family will have their own room. Singles can choose a roommate or two to bunk with. Each room has 3 sets of bunk beds (including one lower bunk that pulls out to be a double bed) as well as a vanity and sink. Large shared bathrooms with toilets and showers are at the end of each wing.

Our Teens Love Summer!

By Youth Pastor Bryce Cooley

It’s that time again. Summer time! Though everyday has not felt like summer, all of our students are waiting with eager expectation to walk out of school and not come back for 3 months. With summer comes a lot of fundraising and a lot of fun. After all you can’t have FUNdraising without FUN. Here are our summer plans:

High school camp (June 10 – 15)
Camp will be at Alliance Redwoods in Occidental, CA. Camp cost $350 which pays for travel, lodging, food, entertainment and activities. It’s well worth it and with all the fundraisers we have been doing more than half of it is paid for a majority of our high school students. Summer Camp is a time that blesses and challenges our students to re-think the way they live and draw closer to God. It is an amazing chance for them to get away, re-evaluate and start their summer of with God on their minds. I’m so excited for our High Schoolers.

Middle School Camp (July 8 – 11)
Camp with be at Camp Alta in Alta, CA. Some will know this is the camp our middle school kids went to for Winter Camp. They loved it and wanted to return for the Summer Season as well! With that and the $175 price of admission, we decided to move our Summer Camp program to Camp Alta. Money is tight and we want to help families in any way possible. I am certain that students and staff alike will be blessed by the ministry of Camp Alta’s friendly staff and leadership.

Ministry Graduation dates
8th graders going into 9th grade are welcome to start coming to high school group starting Thursday July 19. High School group over the summer will be held at the Cooley’s house (11119 Concord River Ct.) for a good time hanging out and swimming.

Graduating Seniors can begin going to our college ministry June 24. The college ministry meets at Philip Cooley’s home (10660 Beclan Dr.) in Rancho Cordova and goes from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Fireworks Booth
The fireworks booth is coming. Do you have students you’re trying to raise money for or even a friend with a student? Each hour you work gives $10 towards the student of your choice. Sign up on Sundays or e-mail me at bryce@cnchurch.org and I can tell you the availability.

We are looking for someone to open and close the booth June 29 – July 4. If you can take care of this, we will pay half of a designated students way to Summer Camp this year.

Have a blessed day,
Bryce
