Small Groups for 2010

People have a love hate relationship with New Year’s Resolutions. It’s easy to write down how you’ll finally accomplish those goals or become a better you. The most popular resolutions are. . . Lose weight. . . Spend more time with family and friends. . . Get financially fit. . .Learn something new. Christians would add incorporate more Biblical practices into daily life.

The hard part is starting and then sticking to the resolution long enough to make a difference. CNC can’t help you with the first resolution (lose weight), but can help with the others.

The answer is small groups! Join a small group today in order to spend more time with family and friends, learn something new and see how you can incorporate more Biblical practices into your daily life.

Below are two new small groups being offered in early 2010. Elsewhere in this newsletter is information on The Smart Step-Mom Group (run by Michelle White).

Getting Financially Fit: Sunday, February 14 – Sunday, March 14, 9:30 am

Sydney Cooley, CNC’s bookkeeper, is leading a small group on “Taming the Money Monster.” The objectives for this class include:

    1. Why we get into debt and how to avoid more,
    2. How to get out of debt,
    3. How to use credit.
    4. Biblical perspective on credit and debt. and
    5. How to be practical.

Contact today Sydney (635-5992, Sydney@cnchurch.org) with your RSVP so she can order enough books in time for you to read the first chapter before February 14. The book, Taming the Money Monster by Ron Blue, is about $8.00, depending on the sale Sydney finds.

There is homework for the first class. First, read chapter one from Taming the Money Monster. Secondly, read The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn. This small book is given (free) to all who attend The Pastor’s Class. If you don’t have a book, contact Sydney today for your free copy.

The Power of a Praying Woman: Sunday, January 10 – Sunday, March 14, 11 a.m.

I am leading women through a 10-week video curriculum on this topic of prayer, power and women. The video curriculum workbook will be a valuable resource for learning about the topic before the class because it has five day’s worth of interaction with that week’s message, Scripture and prayer for each week. The first five lessons will cover the following:

    • Praying to become all God made me to be
    • Praying for a life-transforming walk with God
    • Praying to be free of the past
    • Praying to put my life in right order
    • Praying to surrender control of my life to God

RSVP today: Susan@cnchurch.org or 635-5992. The Power of a Praying Woman video curriculum workbook is normally $14.95. Susan has three workbooks for sale at $10.17 each.

More small groups will be offered in 2010. Read CrossRoads and bulletins for the pertinent information. But here’s a teaser list of what will be offered:

    • 40 Days of Purpose
    • Boundaries
    • a marriage class

Contact me today if you have a question, an idea, will host a group in your home or will lead a group (susan@cnchurch.org or 635-5992).

Why be a part of a Small Group?

If you are wondering how to deepen your relationship with God and discover how to live as His disciple, one essential ingredient for spiritual growth is being involved in a small group ministry. Small groups come in all sorts of varieties, shapes and sizes. The majority of students who have developed a lasting commitment to Christ in our youth ministry have been in a small group.

A small group can help you grow in 3 ways in your relationship with God:

  1. You grow by growing with others.
  2. You learn about God’s word and how to apply it to your life.
  3. You share your joys and struggles and pray about the challenges you’re facing in your life. When you’re in a small group, you soon discover helpful ideas about how to love and live for God in a more meaningful way.

Whatever the topic or specific design of a small group, small groups that succeed do a few important things:

  1. They meet for a specific purpose.
  2. They emphasize a high commitment in order to develop relationships and consistency. 3
  3. Whatever is said in the group stays in the group; confidences are kept, not broken. And
  4. They are balanced, flexible and meet the needs of the people in the group.

Getting involved in a small group will help you deepen your friendship with God and others who want to do the same. (John 13: 34-35)

542 Campaign

By Pastor Mike

Pastor Mike & Robin The “2” in “5-4-2” stands for two people; Susan Wright and Jeff Davies.  Susan directs the Women’s ministries, small groups, and oversees Children’s Ministries.  Jeff is moving into the role of Executive Pastor.  That means he will be helping to administrate our ever growing ministries at CNC and help provide pastoral care for the congregation.

Susan finished her Master’s Degree from Western Seminary in August.  In September, the board decided to hire her full time.  In our 2009 budget we set aside enough monies for 8 months of part-time employment and four months of full-time employment for Susan.  Our 2009 giving is on track to meet this need!  In 2010 we will need to increase the budget to cover 1twelve months of full time employment for Susan.

Jeff has also been full time with us for several years now, but his salary has been subsidized by the Central Pacific District and other supporters inside and out of the Church.  We have paid only a portion of his salary out of the General Fund giving.  This coming year, the Governing Board has made the decision to support him fully from General Fund giving because the other support is coming to an end.

5-4-2

To keep Susan and Jeff at their current salaries we need an additional $40,000.00 given to the General Fund than has come in this year.  This may seem like a daunting task to you, as it did to me, before I took the “5” into account.

The “5” in the “5-4-2” stands for $5 a week.  If 154 people will commit to give $5 a week, in addition to what they are already give, the total will add up to $40,000.00.  Jeff and Susan will be able to continue their ministries without suffering a financial setback.  Also, the ministries we have come to enjoy will continue.  In other words, it will take five dollars a week for two people to continue to minister.  “5-4-2”

Will you please pray about whether God would have you make this additional sacrifice? Robin and I have prayed and believe God wants us to give more than $5 a week in additional giving.  We are blessed to be in a position to do so.

If you would like to pledge to the 5-4-2 Campaign, email us at office@cnchurch.org and let us know about your decision.  Whatever you decide, thanks for your continued support of the ministry of CNC

God bless,

Pastor Mike

Learning to Live with Chronic Pain

Did you know that 1 in 3 people (this includes children) have chronic pain and that 2 out of 3 seniors have chronic pain? Many of these people don’t look ill. They live with an invisible chronic illness.

This invisible illness can be tough to live with. CNC is offering a 5 week class on Learning to Live with Chronic Illness by Lisa J. Copen.

It will start Thursday, November 5 and meet during the day. This group is open to men and women. The time and meeting place is still to be determined.

RSVP to Susan Wright or contact her with your questions: Susan@cnchurch.org or 635-5992 x18
