2009's reach

Mike and Robin picBy Pastor Mike Mitchum

As another year begins, I look back on the last one with wonder. I am amazed at how God is extending the “reach” and providing the needs of CNC.

Our “reach” is extended like never before. At the time of writing this article, a week has just passed that saw three significant events. The Arabic Church that we sponsor on Sundays, had a Christmas program in which the sanctuary was completely full. In attendance were more than fifty Muslims who were hearing the gospel for the first time. The building was also full for the Big Kids Club Christmas program. Mostly attended by by area families, they also heard the good news of the Christmas story. Not to be left out, we were able to share the gospel with more people than would fit in one service in our two Sunday worship services.

We are extending our reach in other ways as well. Eteen (a Bible Study ministry to Middle Schoolers) has found a place to meet within our walls. Our Neighborhood Meals program continues to reach hundreds through the course of a year. The CLUB respite care program continues to grow.

A trip to Jordan this year extended our reach overseas. We look forward to another trip in two years.

This past year also saw God provide all the needs for the ministries of CNC. We ended the year with all operating expenses met.

The Board took a step of faith in 2009 by trusting God to provide for the expanding needs of the ministry. It was a scary step in a time of economic downturn. The people of the Church remained faithful in their giving to the Lord, and the giving increased over the previous year.

We have been able to hire Susan Wright and Jeff Davies as pastoral staff. When I write this we just need 39 more 5-4-2 pledges. Again, this is cause for praise to God as we trust him to provide the rest.

I am expecting that 2010 will be a year in which our “reach” is extended even further. May more people hear of the love of Christ through the ministries as testimonies of Cordova Neighborhood Church.

An anticipated arrival

By Pastor Mike Mitchum

Mike and Robin picWell, you knew it was coming. You knew it was only a matter of time before I wrote an article referring to the arrival of my first grandchild! I tried to wait. I am trying not to mention it every week in my sermon. Really, I am trying.

However, I had a thought today that the anticipated arrival of this little baby girl just might change the way I look at the birth of Jesus . . . forever.

I think of my daughter, son-in-law, and their baby (affectionately named “Fetus Cooley” by her Dad) almost every day.  She will come in three and one-half months.  I am looking forward to the birth as if it is the most important event in the world for 2010.

If this is how I feel, can you imagine the anticipation of Joseph and Mary as the awaited the birth of “God With Us”? It surely was on their minds each day.  I wonder if they knew it would be the most important event in the history of the world!?

The way I feel about my grandchild’s arrival reminds me that the Advent season is a time in which we can anticipate the arrival of Jesus all over again.  That is what worship during advent is all about.  We go back in our minds to that time leading up to Jesus’ birth.  It can be on our minds every day.  We can reaffirm our belief that this was a history changing and life changing event.

I also wonder what my granddaughter will do with her life. I know; I need to settle down a bit, but I can’t help thinking about this.  After all, this child will be loved by God, and he has a wonderful plan for her life.  I wonder what God will do in her and through her?

Mary and Joseph already knew the answer to this question in regard to their son, Jesus.  God told Joseph in a dream what his son would accomplish.  Regarding Mary, God said, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21 NIV)

The advent season is a time to reflect on God’s love demonstrated by Jesus payment for our sins.   When we trust in Jesus, who died for our sins and rose again from the dead, we will be fully forgiven and accepted by God.  Just think, it all began with the birth of a baby.

A Word from Pastor Bill

gaube B&E

Christmas reveals a God whom we can’t understand and yet is so approachable. What is more disarming than a little baby? Yet that baby was a uniquely perfect blending of God and human flesh. Frankly, my inability to fully grasp all this has bothered me, even challenged my faith. The more I discover about God, the more I see I need to learn.

Take Psalm 90 for instance. It portrays a God we live in, who is without end or beginning. He created the earth and natural cycles in all of nature. Yet they do not limit Him. He has infinite knowledge of everything and everyone. He has awesome power, fierce justice and complete purity. Yet God wants to satisfy us each day with unfailing love, give us a song of joy and purpose in life.

How can we wrap our hearts and minds around this majestic God? We can’t, on our own. That is why verses 11 and 12 tell us to submit to Him and to humbly accept His evaluation of life and us. Ask Him to teach you each day and accept His wisdom.

We find a wonderful example of this in Mary, Mother of Jesus. She followed God and yet was dumbfounded when His angel presented her with an impossible situation. Her cry echoes our response to a measureless God: “How can this be?” After more mind-boggling information, she submits and accepts God’s evaluation of her situation: “May it be unto me as you have said.”

Understand this; we do submit to someone’s understanding of us. It might be society’s, philosophy’s, or the God of the Bible’s. We are making these choices whether we realize it or not. Elijah, standing between an altar to an idol and one to God, challenged the people, “How long will you halt between two opinions?”

At Jesus birth, the angels sang of peace. Jesus said He gives us peace, “but not as the world gives.” The Apostle Paul prayed we find a peace that “passes all understanding.” That’s it friends! At the manger we submit to the invitation of a powerful, loving God who passes all understanding. And if you think about it, if we really could understand Him, would he be God?

The 1…2…3…4's of my ministry at CNC

By Susan Wright (635-5992, Susan@cnchurch.org)

susan September 1, 2009 started a new era in my life: a full-time career at CNC. I’ve had only two other full-time jobs (each lasted less than two years) and a few part-time jobs. The oddest one was as a nighttime receptionist at a funeral home. Mainly, I’ve been a stay-at-home mom and wife, and homeschooling mom.

My new “career” is more than a career though. It is also my ministry and passion. Let me explain what I’m involved in at CNC.

Ministry M.A.P.

By Pastor Jeff Davies

Jeff & Jess-1 I once knew a pastor who was routinely asked by good-intentioned people how he filled his schedule.  It was as if they said to him, “It’s obvious you are busy on Sunday, but what do you do with all that free time the rest of the week?”  He and I would laugh about this as there were always more ministry opportunities than available time.  In the spirit of only seeing the tip of the iceberg, here’s a breakdown of some of the responsibilities I oversee.  I have grouped them into my ministry M.A.P. (Missions, Administration, Pastoral ministry).

542 Campaign

By Pastor Mike

Pastor Mike & Robin The “2” in “5-4-2” stands for two people; Susan Wright and Jeff Davies.  Susan directs the Women’s ministries, small groups, and oversees Children’s Ministries.  Jeff is moving into the role of Executive Pastor.  That means he will be helping to administrate our ever growing ministries at CNC and help provide pastoral care for the congregation.

Susan finished her Master’s Degree from Western Seminary in August.  In September, the board decided to hire her full time.  In our 2009 budget we set aside enough monies for 8 months of part-time employment and four months of full-time employment for Susan.  Our 2009 giving is on track to meet this need!  In 2010 we will need to increase the budget to cover 1twelve months of full time employment for Susan.

Jeff has also been full time with us for several years now, but his salary has been subsidized by the Central Pacific District and other supporters inside and out of the Church.  We have paid only a portion of his salary out of the General Fund giving.  This coming year, the Governing Board has made the decision to support him fully from General Fund giving because the other support is coming to an end.

5-4-2

To keep Susan and Jeff at their current salaries we need an additional $40,000.00 given to the General Fund than has come in this year.  This may seem like a daunting task to you, as it did to me, before I took the “5” into account.

The “5” in the “5-4-2” stands for $5 a week.  If 154 people will commit to give $5 a week, in addition to what they are already give, the total will add up to $40,000.00.  Jeff and Susan will be able to continue their ministries without suffering a financial setback.  Also, the ministries we have come to enjoy will continue.  In other words, it will take five dollars a week for two people to continue to minister.  “5-4-2”

Will you please pray about whether God would have you make this additional sacrifice? Robin and I have prayed and believe God wants us to give more than $5 a week in additional giving.  We are blessed to be in a position to do so.

If you would like to pledge to the 5-4-2 Campaign, email us at office@cnchurch.org and let us know about your decision.  Whatever you decide, thanks for your continued support of the ministry of CNC

God bless,

Pastor Mike

Learning to Live with Chronic Pain

Did you know that 1 in 3 people (this includes children) have chronic pain and that 2 out of 3 seniors have chronic pain? Many of these people don’t look ill. They live with an invisible chronic illness.

This invisible illness can be tough to live with. CNC is offering a 5 week class on Learning to Live with Chronic Illness by Lisa J. Copen.

It will start Thursday, November 5 and meet during the day. This group is open to men and women. The time and meeting place is still to be determined.
